What I think.
Rather You Live feels like another really good example of what Grace Carter can do now that her music seems more honest and more connected to what she actually wants to create. I don’t know if “emotional” is exactly the word I would use, because the song is still fun and really easy to listen to, but there is definitely a feeling behind it. It doesn’t feel empty or like something that exists just because she needed another single.
And honestly, this is not completely different from the other singles she has been releasing either. There is already a certain direction forming between them, and I really like that. Rather You Live continues that without sounding like she is just repeating the exact same song again. It feels like Grace is becoming more comfortable with her own sound, and maybe having more freedom with her music is helping with that.
Sonically, this song is just so nice to listen to. Like, really nice. It has this effortless quality where you play it once and immediately want to play it again, and then suddenly you realize the song is already over. I’ve listened to it multiple times and it still has that effect on me. It doesn’t need some huge production moment or an insane chorus to keep me interested, because the song itself already flows so naturally.
I also really like the balance between how fun it sounds and what it carries emotionally. It never becomes too heavy, but it also never feels superficial. That balance is probably what makes the song so replayable for me. You can just enjoy it for the sound, but there is still something there if you actually pay attention to what she is expressing.
And I think that is what I’m enjoying the most about Grace’s recent music in general. There is more honesty there. The songs feel like they have something to say, but they are not trying extremely hard to prove that they are deep or meaningful. Rather You Live is simply a good song that feels natural for her, and sometimes that is more than enough.
Honestly, this made me even more excited for the album. The singles already feel connected enough that I can imagine them working together as part of a bigger project, while still having their own personalities. If the rest of the album keeps this level of quality and this same feeling of Grace being more comfortable with what she wants to make, I’m pretty confident it is going to be really good.
