What I think.
Housewife is a really good song, but honestly, I feel like Tate McRae is becoming a little too comfortable doing the same thing. I enjoyed it, the production is good, and the song has enough personality to be genuinely fun, but I can't say I heard anything that surprised me that much. It sounds very much like something Tate would release, which is both a good thing and probably my biggest issue with it.
I actually like the concept behind the song. The idea of being your own housewife, making your own money and not needing someone else to give you the life you want is pretty interesting. There is also something fun about how she plays with the traditional meaning of the word. Instead of presenting herself as someone whose life revolves around a relationship, she basically makes herself the center of everything. And I think that confidence works really well for Tate.
The lyrics also touch on the music industry and the pressure that comes with fame, which gives the song a little more substance than just being another confident pop single. I like that she brings those things together without making the song overly serious. It still feels playful and easy to enjoy, and I think that balance is one of its strengths.
But sonically, I still wish she had tried something a little different. I understand that Tate has developed a sound that works for her, and there is nothing wrong with continuing to explore it. The problem is that Housewife doesn't really take that sound somewhere particularly new. It is polished, catchy and well produced, but I can easily imagine it sitting alongside several of her previous releases without standing out that much.
And that's what makes this song a little frustrating for me, because I genuinely like it. I don't think it's weak or that Tate is doing anything badly here. It's just that when an artist keeps returning to a very similar formula, even a good song can start feeling a little too familiar. I would love to see her experiment more, especially now that she has already established such a recognizable identity.
Still, Housewife is a very enjoyable release. The concept is good, the production works, and Tate delivers exactly the kind of energy that makes her music so appealing. I just hope this new era has a few more surprises waiting, because while more of the same can definitely be good, I think she has the potential to give us something even better.
